British GT Qualifying: Lamborghinis take both GT3 poles at Snetterton

Barwell Motorsport’s Lamborghinis enjoyed a clean sweep of the British GT Championship pole positions at Snetterton this afternoon after topping each of the GT3 segments in Qualifying.

Rob Collard was the pace setter in the opening 10-minute session for Am rated drivers, lapping the 300 circuit in 1m47.861s. It was an impressive showing from the former British Touring Car Championship ace as he was the only driver to dip beneath the 1m48s boundary during the session. His closest rival was the sister car of Alex Martin which lapped just 0.177s adrift of the outright pace.

Behind that there was a wider margin to the Mercedes-AMG of previous British GT Champion Ian Loggie, who led the non-Lamborghini charge in his 2 Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG. There was another car from the German marque towards the sharp end in Richard Neary’s hands too with Giacomo Petrobelli rounding out the top-five in his Aston Martin Vantage.

The Lamborghini pace continued into the second session for GT3 cars too, with Sandy Mitchell this team emerging fastest of the Pro pack in the car he co-pilots with Martin. It wasn’t to be a Barwell one-two this time, however, with the 2 Seas Mercedes-AMG taking second in Phil Keen’s hands following Loggie’s strong showing moments before.

And the squad followed that up with an improved performance from its other car in GT3 Qualifying 2 with Maximilian Goetz taking third as the top-three were separated by less than two tenths of a second. Behind that, Tom Gamble was fourth in the Optimum Motorsport McLaren 720s with Sam Neary, son of Richard, securing another top-five placing for the Team Abba Racing car.

Honours in the GT4 class were split between Ginetta and McLaren with Aston Millar securing class pole position for himself and Freddie Tomlinson in the opening session for the second group of cars. Zak Meakin was fastest in the second GT4 session, in the McLaren Artura he shares with Jack Brown.

The results from each class’s opening session will set the grid for the first of two one-hour British GT races tomorrow with the race two taking its grid from the latter sessions.
